AI & Machine Vision for Automated Pineapple Harvesting

AKA Electrical & Automation has been working with Pineapple Innovations to assist with the development and integration of an AI-powered machine vision system for automated pineapple harvesting.

The system uses onboard cameras to detect pineapples as the harvesting machine travels through the crop. When fruit is correctly positioned, the vision system communicates with the machine controls to activate the harvesting mechanism and transfer the pineapple onto a conveyor.

Development is also progressing toward using AI vision to assess characteristics such as fruit colour and maturity, opening further opportunities for automated grading, counting and quality inspection.

The project is a great example of how industrial automation, AI and machine vision can be applied to solve real-world challenges in Australian agriculture.
